Love as the essence of Christian worship in the writings of Joseph Ratzinger-Benedict XVI

Abstract
For Joseph Ratzinger-Benedict XVI, love is the central explanatory element of Christian worship, which is not limited to liturgical action but extends to life. The Eucharist, as a sacrifice of Christ's love, makes it possible for the baptized to join in his sacrifice and to give life a Eucharistic dimension that does not exist without love. Ratzinger summarized this truth in the term logiké latreía, which best captures the essence of New Covenant worship and means sacrifice expressed “in the word”. The understanding of love as the essence of worship derives from two elements: the concept of logos, in which the author finds the theological basis for explaining man and his likeness to God, and the sacrifice of Christ, which finds its foundation in love. Authentic Christian worship, made possible by the sacrifice of the Logos, is the worship of God, but it also manifests itself in an act of serving to one's neighbour, thereby demonstrating that it is not empty ritualism, but the love that God desires.Keywords:

Currently prefect of the Theological Seminary in Tarnów, professor in moral theology and spirituality at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow, Faculty of Theology, Section in Tarnów.
